Committed to Abiding in God

AUGUST 17, 2025

Speaker: Mike Peters

Summary

Living in God's presence isn't meant to be a Sunday-only experience but a continuous way of life. When we abide in God's love, we experience His presence not just during worship but in everyday moments of love and connection with others. The cross, not our circumstances, is the true measure of God's love for us. As we choose to remain in His love, fear is cast out and we naturally extend love to others. The evidence of abiding in God is seen in how we treat people around us, reflecting His character in all our interactions.

Description

Living in God's presence is often treated like visiting a favorite vacation spot—we enjoy it on Sundays but return to 'real life' during the week. However, God invites us to make His presence our permanent dwelling place. In 1 John 4, we learn that 'God is love,' meaning when we participate in loving others, we're experiencing the essence of God's presence through those interactions. The cross, not our circumstances, demonstrates the true measure of God's love. He sent His Son as the ultimate expression of love, inviting us to 'abide' in Him—to stay, remain, and take up residence in His love. When we genuinely abide in God's love, fear is cast out and we naturally extend love to others. The evidence that we're living in God's presence is how we treat people around us. If we find ourselves being impatient, unkind, or ungentle, it indicates we've stepped away from abiding in His love. The invitation is clear: don't just visit God's presence occasionally but live there permanently. This means starting each day acknowledging His presence, catching ourselves when we stray, returning to the cross when we feel distant, and practicing intentional love toward others. As we abide in God's love, His Spirit produces in us the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
